Scene Analysis 3.4
Characters: Macbeth / Lennox / Lords

  • What happens in your scene? Out line the basic events.
    • In my scene, 3.4, the setting is at the party of Macbeth that he is throwing for himself for becoming the king. They are having fun and the murderer comes in to tell Macbeth that Banquo is now dead and that Fleance ran away. Macbeth tells him that he will go catch him, enjoys the party but the ghost of Banquo comes out and Macbeth starts to get scared. He talks to himself. After the guests go away, Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth that he feels guilt and Lady Macbeth tells him that he should stay calm.
  • What do you think are the key purposes of your scene? In other words, what is this scene important?
    • My key purpose of my scene is that Macbeth can see a ghost. This is very important because Macbeth felt alright after killing Banquo but now he is afraid that he might get caught and he wants to not feel guilty. This is important because he killed Duncan and now he is killing more and more people and finally he feels some guilt, but he does not stop because he doesn't want to be punished and he wants to avoid it.
  • What are your reactions to this scene?
    • I am really surprised because I didn't know that Macbeth would have felt guilt. He looked really strong when he decided to kill Banquo. First he was very scared to kill Duncan but he changed because now he is the one who is suggesting who to kill. Therefore this was a surprise. Lady Macbeth is still confident and not afraid therefore I'm not surprised about Lady Macbeth but i am surprised that Macbeth changed a lot.
  • What does your character want in this scene?
    • I think that Macbeth wants in this scene that he wants to be out of the trouble of murdering people. I think he is regretting it a lot and he sees the ghost of Banquo. He feels guilty and he is scared of the ghost. From this we can learn that he is not really feeling good about killing people and wants to be freed from the guilty. Lennox and his companions just want to know what happened.
  • What is your character's motivation for doing what he or she does?
    • I think Macbeth’s motivation is the power and wanting the power so badly. He wants the power so badly that he kills people in order to have it and keep it when he finally got it. He first kills Duncan in order to get the position of the King, after he killed Banquo because he wanted to keep his power. Lennox doesn’t really do much in this scene so he doesn’t have a motivation.
  • What obstacles stand in his or her way?
    • Macbeth’s obstacles that stand in his way is the Banquo’s ghost. During the party that he was having, he kept on yelling at Banquo’s ghost. Lennox tries to find out what is wrong with Macbeth but Lady Macbeth is his obstacle because she prevents Macbeth from telling what happened because she doesn’t want to get caught killing.
  • What happens when your character confronts these obstacles?
    • Macbeth keeps on seeing the ghost of Banquo and starts to yell at him and shake because he is scared. He says that he is innocent. Macbeth keeps on seeing the ghost so the party had to stop and the Lords had to leave. He goes crazy when he sees the ghost because he is scared and doesn’t want to be caught killing the king and feels guilty. Lennox just had to go back to his house and end the party early because Lady Macbeth was stopping and saying Macbeth is crazy at the moment.
  • Are there any distinctive elements in your character's way of speaking?
    • At the first part of my scene, Macbeth is all happy because he is having a party and his plans were going on track. However he suddenly sees a ghost of Banquo and he starts to shake and fear the ghost. Therefore he changes from a soft kind voice to a sudden shouting and scared voice. Lennox doesn’t change in his way of speaking.
  • What is your character thinking during the scene?
    • I think Macbeth is thinking that he might get caught soon because he feels too guilty. The main reason he sees a ghost is because he is very guilty that he killed people. Macbeth is thinking about how to get out of this trouble and wants to go to see the witches to find out what is going to happen. Lennox is thinking about how Macbeth is going weird and I think he would be suspecting something.

Self Reflection

  • 1. Evaluate the performance of your group. What went well? What didn’t go well?
    • In my opinion, I think our group did really well. We were able to perform everything that we practiced before. We read all the lines clearly, the props were good. However we did bad in taking turns in the play. One time we made a mistake because Sangwoo said his line when it wasn't his turn to speak.
  • 2. How well did you contribute to your group?
    • I planned how the stage will look like and how we will say our lines and how we will act it out.
  • 3. How well did you perform as an individual?
    • I didn't do my best because i missed a part where I had to talk while Lady Macbeth was talking but i forgot to say my lines. I also made a mistake when I had to play a song because I was really confused during the play and forgot to play it.
  • 4. What could have improved your scene performance?
    • I think we should of had some background music playing during the scene changes because we just turned off the light which was not enough to show that we had to change our characters.
  • 5. How did the scene performance help you better understand the play.

  • I now fully understand how the characters feel when they were saying their lines. I now can see how they had emotions but when i was just reading it, i didn't really care about how they would be feeling. I think acting out this play was very helpful for me.
